I received a phone call from the Wilmington Star Newspaper around July 2000.  The woman calling me, Bettie Fennell, said she was asked by Bruce Whealton to write an article about me being investigated for "practicing therapy online".  Mrs Fennell had written a article for Mr. Whealton before related to multiple personality disorder, now called Dissociative Identity Disorder.  So, a favorable relationship was already established with her when he asked her to write an article about North Carolina Board of Pyschology's investigation.

During this phone call, Mrs. Fennell stated that she had talked to several people, including Bruce Whealton, Pat Stubbs, and Christine Brandon and they had told her a story that she found "unbelievable".  She said she wanted to talk to me before writting any thing related to the story she was being told about.  I asked her if she would be willing to talk to some other people besides those she had already talked to before writing her article or if she wanted some information sent to her that would support anything I had to say.  I was told that "she didn't think it was nescessary".  She asked me a few questions.  Such as, do I know how some people practice therapy without a license?  I told her I really didn't know, but it would depend on how each state defines and protects the usage of certain titles.  As an example I explained to her that some states will allow any one at all to call themself a therapist, others don't allow it.  Some allow any one to call themselves a spiritual advisor, or marriage counselor without any credentials, others don't allow it.  She asked how I knew the people that she had talked to.

"This man is a very charismatic speaker" Mrs Fennell quotes Christine Brandon of saying.  Charismatic?, Over the Internet, in a chatroom where you don't talk to someone, but instead you type out your words?

"Mr. Whealton, the licensed clinical social worker, said he learned about Mr. Freifeld from Ms. Stubbs..."  This is not true and was not said to me during my conversation with Mrs. Fennell.  Had it been I could have forwarded her an email I sent to Mr. Whealton when we first started communicating which tells him about the HIP site, the two woman that were caught conning people out of money, and Pat Stubbs.  Mr. Whealton jumped on the HIP site and buddied up with Pat Stubbs eight months after having met me.  He did so only after I confronted him about harmful and unethical therapuetic practices that he was engaging in with a client of his. (See Bruce Whealton link below)

Mrs. Fennell quotes Pat Stubbs saying her "short-term goal is to put Mr. Freifeld out of business."   Out of business?  In over 2 years, since this mess was started, not one person has said they sent any money to me.  Simply because I am not "in business".  Mrs. Fennell wrote some misleading material by quoting such a statement, yet failing to mention that she had talked to no one that paid any money, or that she asked me and was told that no one ever sent money to me for any type of help I provided.

Pat Stubbs is quoted as having said "a long-term goal is to "stop unsafe online practices."   Pat Stubbs impersonated me and Mrs. Fennell didn't think my sending her the photos of it was nescessary when asked if she wanted any material or to speak with anyone that would support what I was saying.  These are the kind of "unsafe practices" that I have been exposed to, not that I have committed.

She also fails to identify the former client of Mr. Whealton's I supposedly "touched inappropriately" in his office, or what qualified such a statement in her article.  When, where and how was this person touched?  Seems to be questions any journalist would ask.  "touched inappropriately" leaves alot of unanswered questions.  However, 8 days after this article was published Mr. Whealton was in a local hotel having sex with a pyschiatric client in a altered state of consciousness, as a person with multiple personality disorder, and charged her insurance carrier for it as a "session".  There are also sheets and towels in the costody of the Wilmington Police Departments property and evidence room with Bruce Whealton's semen on it that came from a clients appartment.  I would like to know what I am suppose to have done to someone in his office that qualifies as "inappropriate touching".  It would appear he, as a therapist, doesn't know what that means!

Other Quotes published in the Wilmington Star Newspaper:

"Mr. Whealton said two of his former patients moved in with Mr. Freifeld."  I was not even asked if this was true by Mrs. Fennell before she quoted it.  Its not.  I rent a room from a woman, her husband and their teenage daughter and I have had no one move in with me in over 12-15 years.

"He (Bruce Whealton) said Mr. Freifeld diagnosed both of them as having multiple personality disorders after only talking to them online."  This is not true, nor was I asked if it were true.  I have NEVER "diagnosed" anyone.  I have an email from Mr. Whealton's ISP account with BellSouth.Net in which he states HE has diagnosised one of his two clients, that I knew, as being multiple using a series of standarized test and general interactions during therapy.  The only other former client of his, that I knew at the time, was diagnosed as MPD by a highly credentialled psychotherapist in West Virginia before having ever met me.

"Mr. Whealton said he confronted Mr. Freifeld on several occasions about the dangers of some techniques he was using."  Techniques I was using with who?  When?  Why didn't Mr. Whealton, who knowing full well I am not certified or licensed to do any such thing, report me at the time he claims I was doing this "hypnosising and inappropriate touching"?  Simply because it never happened. Again, only making a false claim about me after I confronted him about what he was doing as "therapy" with someone I know.

"She (Christine Brandon) became suspicious when her friend was lured to Mr. Freifeld's home."  Lured?  Mrs. Fennell fails to write any thing that justifies her writing such a sentence.  People develope online friendships, and even romantic relationships over the Internet every day.  I have made many friends, known some of them now for over 7 years.  There was no "luring" anyone to my home.  I have visited several people I know from the Internet and several have come to visit me.  This sentence should never have been written.  Simply because it was an untrue statement by Christine Brandon.

Mrs. Bettie Fennell, the newspaper journalist, did not take any measures at all to verify that what someone else was saying or what she was writing was true.  Bruce Whealton's having had an article written by her before, and his credentials as a licensed "therapist" give him credibility that he was unworthy of and didn't honor.

Wilmington Start Newspaper was contacted by me and told to remove the article from the Internet or face a law suit.  I was called back, apologized to, and the article was removed from the Internet.  Mrs. Fennell, the journalist, did not communicate with me, but one of her supervisiors did.  Two attorney's eagerly await my consent to file suit against this woman and the newspaper.  However, I don't feel that is the solution.  They were simply "lured" into this situation by others, namely Bruce Whealton, Pat Stubbs, and Christine Brandon.
